Department of Urology SLK Kliniken Heilbronn - Specializing in renal tumors

The treatment concept prefers the organ-preserving therapy and the comprehensive cancer rehabilitation

The state of the art of modern technical possibilities of ultrasound methods makes it possible to diagnose malignant kidney tumor at early stage. The prognosis will be good and often the affected kidney is preserved, after the tumor was removed.

In the Department of the Urology Heilbronn, the results of laparoscopic treatment are excellent.

The Urology Heilbronn treats benign renal diseases, such as the kidney stones, in addition to the uro- oncology.

Renal function

The most important function of the kidney is the excretion of urine. The waste products from the metabolism of the body cells are excreted by the urine.

Also characterized the kidneys responsible excreting excess water, salts and foreign substances (drugs) and neutralize the acids produced by the metabolism.

The kidneys have a glandular function too. They produce 'Renin', which is important for the regulation of blood pressure and erythropoietin, which is responsible for the formation of red blood cells and malfunction of the kidney may lead to anemia.

The kidneys access into the hormonal control of bone metabolism. This particularly affected the vitamin D metabolism.

This is a bacterial infection of the kidney tissue and the renal pelvis where acute infections occur more frequently in women than in men.

Usually such an infection develops from a urinary tract infection because the bacteria migrate from the ureter into the renal pelvis.

In the case of a chronic pyelonephritis, the kidney can be damaged as far as it may be a full kidney failure and the dialysis will inevitably, because the kidneys can no longer fulfill their functions.

If the urine cannot drain off, germs could be arise.

The reasons are in kidney tumors, abnormalities of the urinary tract, prostate adenoma. Further metabolic disorders, like gout or diabetes, are responsible of the secondary kidney disease.

The symptoms include fever and back pain. Often, one of years of elevated blood pressure and atherosclerotic vascular changes in a chronic renal failure (vascular nephropathies) orginates, if raised blood pressure and atherosclerotic vascular changes exist for years.

At the first step, we analyse the blood and urine on germs and bacteria. In additional of ultrasound, urography (X-ray) and a cystoscopy, we diagnose the cause of the hydronephrosis.

We treat the pyelonephritis with antibiotics or by the removal of the kidney stones endoscopically (PCNL) or extracorporeally (ESWL).

You can prevent such a disease caused by drinking enough (two liters / day).

Renal Cell Carcinoma

Most kidney tumors are malignant as so-called renal cell carcinoma. In advanced stages the tumor can sprinkle locally and protrusion of the vascular system into the right heart. Metastases are including in the lungs, bones and the brain. Malignant tumors of the renal pelvis and benign renal tumors such as oncocytoma or angiomyolipoma are rare.

The Department of Urology SLK Kliniken Heilbronn offer successful treatments of renal tumours by using the minimally invasive surgery.

The management of renal cell carcinoma at our Dep. includes especially:
- laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and adrenalectomy
- nephro-sparing surgery (also laparoscopically)
- immunotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy
- chemoembolization for advanced stages
- focal therapy (RFA, Cryotherapy) in cooperation with our Radiological Department

Percutaneous biopsy can be performed completely accurate by using ultrasound or computed tomography.

In addition to laparoscopic or open surgery we suggest a special medication has been successful in reducing the growth of metastasis, including failures after immunoherapy by use of tyrosinkinase-inhibitors.

If the treatment of kidney cancer has been completed, the patients have to do a life-long follow-up assessment.

Nephro-sparing removal
of a renal cancer

There are two possibilities to preserve of an affected kidney with simultaneous removal of a kidney tumor:

To prevent that the patient will be subjected to dialysis, we spare the tumor-afflicted kidney in case of the other healthy kidney or diseased kidney. We mostly use the laparoscopic technique.

Removal of a tumor-afflicted

There are pathological and functional reasons that favour a removal of the kidney (nephrectomy). At the Urology Heilbronn the minimally invasive (laparoscopic) methods are used.
